The Government of India implemented the system of electronic visas in 2014 facilitating the whole process of applying for a visa to India. Travellers from the eligible countries are allowed to get their visas by simply submitting an online application.

India eVisa system is quite extensive, offering five different eVisa types that serve perfectly for various kinds of trips to India.

Eligible travellers can choose from:
  1. A 30-day single-entry travel authorization issued for leisure purposes
  2. A multiple-entry document issued for business purposes, allowing a total stay of six months
  3. A medical Indian eVisa issued as a triple-entry travel authorization, allowing a total stay of two months spent in India
  4. A multiple-entry one-year eVisa – that can be used for all leisure-related purposes
  5. A multiple-entry five-year eVisa – allows taking numerous 90-day visits to India during a 5-year validity period

Please note that travellers from the United States and Japan are allowed to stay in India up to six months at a time with the 5-year eVisa type on hand.

Documents Needed to Apply

Basic documents include:
  • Passport that will not expire for a minimum of six months from the planned date of entering India
  • A photo of the applicant’s face
Business and medical travellers must submit one additional document each:
  • An invitation letter or business card of the company traveller plans on working with (business travels)
  • A written document describing the treatment that the traveller will be undergoing in India – the document must be issued by the hospital or medical institution the traveller will be visiting (medical treatment-related travels)

  1. Choose a preferred India eVisa type that suits the purpose and length of your visit
  2. Collect the required documents
  3. Fill the online application form with the required details
  4. Check the completed form thoroughly and correct any mistakes or not filled data
  5. Submit your application form
  6. Cover the issuing fee using any method of online payment choosing from several available
  7. Check your email inbox

Completing the whole process of applying takes minutes and can be done fully from home or any other place, as long as you have a stable internet connection. The Indian Government will then review your application and issue your India eVisa within 72 hours.

The approved document is delivered to each traveller via email in PDF form that can easily be downloaded and printed before departure to India.

What do I need to have to enter India with an eVisa

India eVisa holders must:
  • Have a valid passport (that has a validity period extending beyond at least six months)
  • Have a printed copy of the Indian eVisa
  • Enter via one of the specified ports accepting eVisas
